Duane Reade

What does this name mean to you?

Guesses?

A famous New York personality?

Here ya go – Duane Reade is a drug store. Before moving here, I had never heard of this name.   My only knowledge of chain drug stores were, in this order: Walgreens, Walgreens, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. Now that I think about it, not sure if I’d heard of Rite Aid.

I gotta say, I like Duane Reade. I’ve become particularly attached to it probably because when I first moved here, it was the only drug store around.  They have a loyalty card program that gives you $5 store credit for every $100 you spend.  This is not meant to be a commercial for them. I’m just one of those people who has “favorites.”

About Duane Reade
Founded in 1960, Duane Reade is the largest drug store chain in the metropolitan New York City area, offering a wide variety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, health and beauty care items, cosmetics, greeting cards, photo supplies and photofinishing. The company operates 253 stores throughout the metropolitan New York region.

They are in the process of a brand change and their new ad campaign targets New Yorkers. Now, I won’t get into my detailed thoughts on the subject, but I will say that I was out on Saturday with a native New Yorker and a visitor and we realized that their new brand change also is very beneficial to non-New Yorkers.  On the outside, the sign reads “DR pharmacy.” Ah ha! Now when out, visitors will know that Duane Reade is actually a drug store.

first thoughts…retail stores

  • First and foremost, most likely you do not have a car. This means anything that you buy you will have to carry with you. Think to yourself, “do I really want to carry this?”
  • If you are buying anything bigger than a bread box, you’ll likely be asked, “Do you want a shopping bag?” This may seem obvious because of course you want a bag, but they are actually asking if you want a sturdy bag with handles. You’ll get asked this at bigger department stores.
  • If you know you are doing a lot of shopping, get a couple of book bags with straps you can put on your shoulder. This is a LIFESAVER. See my bags post.
  • No tax on items in the city of $150 or less. You can get a coupon for 11% off at Macy’s if you show your out-of-state ID on the 2nd floor.
